July 20, 2015 at 10:31 AM #871Hey everyone! I’m Brittany. I’m an artist first, and a web designer second. I started freelancing at Dear Minerva in 2009 as a web designer, but didn’t take it seriously until 2012. I hope that I can pay the bills freelancing until I can become a full time artist.

I don’t see any reason you can’t successfully combine both…ESPECIALLY since good, reliable web designers are so hard to come by. Thanks so much for joining!
July 21, 2015 at 10:08 AM #886Hey!
I’m a UK based copywriter, with around 3 years of advertising, social strategy and blogging experience behind me. After being inspired by #BBHMM I decided to pull away from unpaid freelancing this summer, and I’m really excited to build networks with and hopefully help out other black freelancers – as well as find my own opportunities.
I always try to ensure my work centers queerness, and decenters whiteness, whilst also setting up a steady flow of paid jobs. My chief interest is in the arts, and I’m keen to help people who are shaking things up in that area tell their story through interviews, human interest features and reviews.
Looking forward to chatting a bit more soon!
Josh

LOL@ #BBHMM…I won’t lie. I sent out a couple of invoices as soon as I heard that song.
Glad to have another copywriter on board!
August 4, 2015 at 12:54 AM #1003Hi guys, I’m Brittany, but most people know me by my nickname, BK. I currently work as a social media manager at an advertising agency and it has quickly become boring. I love social media and I love copywriting, but I’m looking for opportunities that allow me to be more creative and push the envelope. I can only allow my culture to be appropriated via rewritten rap lyrics by brands on Twitter so many times.
I love fashion, social justice issues and politics and I love giving/writing my opinion on all the above. Since I am a recent grad (May 2015) I am very new to the working world and the idea of freelancing. I’ve always been interested in freelancing, but now I want to make that a reality!
August 15, 2015 at 6:51 PM #1067Hey!
I’m Angel. I decided to start freelancing after I realized my college major wasn’t really gonna get me anywhere I wanted to be. I mostly do creative writing and some personal essays. I’m hoping to step my freelance game up by interacting with other people and am hoping to get to a point where I can freelance fulltime.
August 15, 2015 at 9:07 PM #1068Hi,
I’m Gina and I’m a web developer from Trinidad and Tobago, did the whole computer science degree and all. I have toyed with the idea off and on with freelancing since I fell in love with working remotely and the freedom and joy that this brings. I’m 2 years into my freelancing journey since I became one out of necessity in the last year, the opportunities to do anything in software development is limited where I’m from. I have started to take this more seriously since I see it as an avenue to being an entrepreneur and not having to be an employee ever again.
August 15, 2015 at 11:17 PM #1069Hi! I’m Tyshia. I’m a content creator and strategist for beauty/lifestyle brands, sites, and publications. My personal blog–and what initially got me my very first client–is thisbrownqueen.com. Since starting my blog I’ve freelanced for various websites and publications as a beauty and style writer. I’m now taking that creative writing to the next level and freelancing as a content strategist for beauty/lifestyle brands. I help companies create a content strategy that will connect them with their target audience and potential customers. I’ve been freelancing for about two years on the side and am at the point where I know the only way to take this to where I want to be is to make the leap full-time. I’m ready to be free from corporate America and working on my own terms!
August 18, 2015 at 3:03 PM #1078I am an almost-graduated college dropout (one semester from Bachelor’s degree in Social Work/Psychology) who decided to go to Atlanta because I believed that jobs grew on trees there! I quickly learned that wasn’t the case, so I decided to try earn something online while I was applying for every job under the sun. I ended up finding a work at home site, tried out a couple of different sites and ended up earning $10. Encouraged (and slightly discouraged by the low salary), I kept learning and eventually got into the content writing mill: Textbroker, Article Document, etc.) later branching out to oDesk and Elance. A few months after I started, I started to notice that most of my clients were authors, so I decided to specialize in that. That turned into a 4-year up and down journey into publishing, marketing, and promotions (aka Amazon).
At this point in my life, I am seeking to get a job away from the computer, partly while I pursue certification in a more specialized and critical business skill (bookkeeping). In the meantime, I’m still do a little writing, consulting, and administrative support as time allows.
August 18, 2015 at 6:28 PM #1081Hi fellow freelancers!! I am Jaide, a Technical Copywriter and Instructional Designer for a very large financial corporation. My goal is to hand Corporate America my walking papers and never look back. I have been writing full-time for major companies for over seven years (minus 2 lay-offs). The pay is great but my soul hurts every day when I walk into an organization filled with ladder-climbing robots.
I have taken the first steps to my inevitably grand exit by writing and editing part-time. I also have a few other goals up my sleeve, but the written word has always taken care of me, so that is where I am starting my journey to freedom. I look forward to chatting with other freelancers on this site and swapping tips and ideas.
Also at some point I will figure out how to upload a photo to my profile (smile)!

August 25, 2015 at 12:04 PM #1145Greetings Everyone! I’m a total newbie to freelancing but I’m eager to learn and am currently teaching myself how to create a web presence. My background is in mental health and creative writing and aside from doing community work full time, I’m taking classes in the evening in advertising and graphic design. I’m a new student to all of this but I’m serious about learning freelancing and supplementing my income. I appreciate the opportunity to share and learn and connect with you in this space!
Thanks,
~Addy
August 29, 2015 at 3:37 PM #1155Hey everybody!
I’m also new to freelancing. I’ve been trying to blog on and off for a while now, but now I want to take it seriously and pursue freelance writing as a career. I just finished my MSW and would like to engage in education and advocacy work around sexual assault prevention and other issues pertaining to the health and wellbeing of Black women and girls. However, I think that I would rather do it independently as opposed to working for an organization. I’d ultimately like to author books, speak, and write for publications concerning these causes. I feel like I’m all over the place (!!!), but my overall interests are the healing and uplifting of Black women. There are just several avenues I’d like to work in.
I have taken the steps of re-launching my blog (colletteunfiltered.com) and creating my Upwork profile. I’m in the VERY early stages, so now I need to focus on creating content. I don’t have any experience š so I’m not sure how long I should expect before getting clients. Hopefully soon!
I look forward to being a part of this community. I’ve enjoyed all of the resources thus far and hope to learn and grow with you all! š
August 30, 2015 at 10:53 PM #1190Welcome to all our new members!
It’s great to see such a mix of experience and goals. We’re going to learn a lot from each other for sure.
September 2, 2015 at 2:46 PM #1219Hey y’all,
I’m Tiffany. I’m a Marriage and Family Therapist by trade, but have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, and I’m trying not to feel like I wasted four years on a degree I did not use (LOL). I’m somewhat-new to freelancing. I mean, I’ve written for a couple of websites, but I’m over being paid in exposure. I believe that my voice is worth more than that. Although I love my day job, I still love writing, and I believe it’s important to have multiple streams of income. I’ve recently created an Upwork profile and have submitted a couple of proposals. We’ll see where it goes!
Nice to meet everyone!
