Until this month, it’d been over a year since I had any payment issues…I thought I’d “gotten past” that stage of freelancing, but two clients decided to teach me some freelancer humility.
Between the two, I’m owed about $2K…one I think is just an issue because my contact was let go…the other though, getting payments from them has been an issue since day 1, so I’m very glad some of my contract clauses are there (especially the one that allows for calculation of partial services since they’re on a monthly plan).
I woke up today ready to get past my discomfort in calling people about this kind of thing and had a Twitter DM by one of our members who was going through something very similar…seems to be the time of year for it.
For the client with a contact issue, I dug up another name at the company and called them directly, for the second client (who owes the bulk of the balance) I’ll probably end up trying this debt collector for freelancers.
Anybody had any successes collecting on unpaid work? Anybody still struggling with the problem?
I haven’t so far because I let clients know my payment terms beforehand I stop work after the third day of nonpayment (usually) with a grace period of 10 days (depending on the project). I begin collection efforts after the third day.
I’ve only had to bring this issue with one client who paid by the third day.
