It’s website month here at BlackFreelance and it’s got me rethinking my ENTIRE web presence.
I recently sat down to listen to a podcast on freelancing as a B2B business writer an as usual with podcasts, I came out ready to do a million things…one of those being creating an entirely new domain for my freelance work and completely changing my business name. But then I started thinking…
Starting with a name/logo/aesthetic is a huge mistake. Know clearly who you serve, why, and what could make you different, then aesthetics.

Same with a logo. Those are VERY important, but should *compliment* my core business. — BlackFreelance (@BlackFreelance1) October 3, 2015
I think I put too much weight on a cute/catchy name…

I know who I work with. I know why they need me. I’m not communicating with them well…that starts with the site. — BlackFreelance (@BlackFreelance1) October 3, 2015
I REALLY want to launch a completely new domain, but might not be worth it. Going to focus on content and crystal clear messaging first.

A name might be important in the future, but I have more important work to do first.

In my opinion a name is just a name; it’s how you market it that matters most. Think about google.
BlackFreelance says
Yep…exactly. They matter at some level, but are nothing to get stalled on.
Michael Corley says
I’m a bit torn on the idea of not focusing on the “name” issue.
I get the reason why you shouldn’t be held hostage to the process because it can become a huge distraction to getting things done.
But a name embodies the promises your brand makes to clients and prospects and gets affirmed in testimonials, shares, endorsements and referrals.
Am I wrong?
(and great topic Megan)
BlackFreelance says
Hi Michael!
I completely agree re: the promise. I just don’t think a brand name is the most important place to offer that promise…at least not if it’s halting development of other aspects of your business.
Thanks for reading as always!
